I wish to express my deep gratitude for all your talents, teaching and caring about me as a student. You started by providing me with a modest background in literature and reading. Each lesson provided another layer of sophistication, going beyond what I thought possible in writing, always seeing more in me than I could. Seldom can someone change a life, but you have changed mine, and I will forever be humbly indebted and try to ‘measure up.’
I think it's because films are visual and feed my writing. Instead of writing: so and so frowned, films show you how they frown through facial expressions, any body movements. I'm not sitting and taking notes, but I do pay attention, not just as a viewer but as a writer.
Thank you for these articles, Mary. I always learn so much from you.
I agree about how film affects us. I always use film in my creative writing courses, including what's to come here. I also think that if we read deeply and understand how narrative operates, looking beneath what John Gardener called "the continuous dream," we begin to watch films in a new way: see more, understand more and connect more.
So true: writers work all the time. I watch films differently now - there's so much a writer can learn about showing and not telling by watching a movie.
