I think I watched American movies with French subtitles multiple times when I was travelling in France or Belgiıum. But the worst was when I had to watch Fellini's "La città delle donne" at a festival in Italian, since I bought a ticket for the wrong screening. The film was fantastic, although with long dialogues from Marcello Mastroianni as he climbed a ladder (all in Italian of course). I did watch it with subtitles later though...
So fascinating how the effect of subtitles when in the place where the language of the film is spoken. I adore Fellini--so we share that too. Did you know that Fellini kept a dream journal? It became a book--and dreams can be so helpful to our writing journals--as you'll see here as the memoir proceeds. Thank you for reading--and I'll be reading you as well.
About the American movies with subtitles - when I lived in Germany I absolutely despaired of films and TV programmes which had been 'synchronisiert' (dubbed). Local to me was a cinema which showed 'OmU' films - which stood for 'Original mit Untertiteln' - ie shown in their original language with German subtitles.
I'll never forget watching 'Columbo' on German TV for the first time - or the Bond films - the voiceover actors never sounded anything like Peter Falk or Connery/Lazenby/Moore/Dalton etc etc. *sighs*
My favourite viewing would be German-made soap operas, and 'Das Glücksrad' (Wheel of Fortune) - I was obsessed with that game show! I learned so much of the language from those.
In my opinion, Paris is overhyped as a romantic place to live. Prague is more beautiful, cleaner, and boasts more parks. Not that it's a competition, but the only things I really loved about Paris were the lemon tarts! Overpriced beer and food, some lovely parks, yes, and some fantastic museums. But Prague has much better beer (that is also affordable), more intact architecture, and rich history in every nook and cranny. Plus it has just enough quirkiness to keep you on your toes (see David Černy).
I have. And in Paris.
What did you see, Bill? So glad to have you back reading.

I'll have to make that a side trip.
Highly recommend! I can connect you to the best tour guide, too :)
That would be brand. Sorry for the late reply on this one--wasn't notified. You are such a good virtual friend.
Ah, those parks. I particularly like the Jardin du Luxembourg. Enjoy!
The best of all. Love it!
