I'm afraid that whenever I'm asked to think of the first thing that comes to mind, my mind goes blank. I think it must be a hangover from school. I loved both poems, but I especially enjoyed G M Hopkins; the alliteration, assonance and rhythm. His poetry always sounds like music to me. I apologise for making a comment that is off-topic.
Fascinating post and exercises, Mary - thank you. I particularly enjoyed 'The Kingfisher'.
I wonder what you'll make of my Rorschach answers? I'm not sure how I should have gone about this exercise - perhaps just one word for each? Well, I've responded to your words with these ones of mine:
A dozen long-stemmed roses: I love that he loves me, but I wish he'd spent that money on firewood.
The lion and the lamb: An uneasy friendship, devastatingly one-sided.
A black cat: Signals doom AND makes me sneeze. OUT!
An empty doorway and a maple leaf: Something ending - but there's still promise.
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea: A reminder of my beautiful recovery on that Scottish island.

Another informative and lovely post. At my third consecutive read.
Happy Thanksgiving xo
Working on upgrading to poems, not just lines... 😊
