Well said Mary. That opinion piece by Luttig was great.

Mounting frustration that major voices are silent - including the former presidents. Unconscionable.

Mounting frustration that leaders aren't showing to up to marshal... how many millions of us?

Mounting evidence that we need to do it ourselves.

Thank you for your writing and sharing Judge Lutti's testimony in the hearing before the Jan. 6th Committee. I was propelled back in time to hearing through my TV. He verbalized such wisdom and decades of the practice of law, a moral compass that I formed his every word. I had wish I had been in the road to hear him in person.

The poem at the end was amazing. Poetry has always meant a great deal to me. It is music to my soul. Again thank you.

Oh, Helen, Just seeing this and apologies for late reply! I also was propelled back in time to a moral compass that is non-partisan. And the poem--couldnt help but quote it. xx

There's never a bad time to quote Heaney, but this seemed like a particularly good moment to do so, as you have so tellingly done here, Mary.

I also love your watercolour image of the flag!

Thank you for this post. Amidst those who seek to destroy and dominate, there are still those on both sides who know we need to meet, greet each other with a neighbor's and friend's love and respect and get down to the business of taking care of those who need it. It's a very large boat we sail on, these United States. Or as I've heard the Iroquois call it, this Turtle Island.

So utterly apt; as much or more so than a year ago. This is a stirring piece, with your words and those of Heaney and Judge Luttig. We need belief. We need hope that there can be a "tidal wave of justice." May it be so.

that poem was amazing, as was this whole post thank you for writing it.

My fav lines:

Believe in miracles

and cures and healing wells.

Call the miracle self-healing:

The utter self-revealing

double-take of feeling.

What i struggle with is the thick shawl of cynicism I've got over me these days. I watched the hearings and freaked out at all the testimony but I truly dont know if anything will get done about it, and sort of have to assume that it won't so as to not get my hopes up. Idk. How do you stay positive and hopeful about it ??

I, too, Alex, am seriously disturbed by the polls and believe we may very well lose our Democracy to Autocracy big time. Not a single seated Republican in the Senate has spoken out against "the big lie" -- and the ads I've seen that encourage violence and the Republicans running who outrightly state they will not accept the results of their election if they lose discourage me even more. My optimism is gone! But I voted here in LA and have given as much money as I can to Mark Kelly, to Beto O'Rourke and to others fighting the good fight. You also will never lose your place in line and good luck with the show tonight. xo Mary

I like this very much. I like that it starts with self-healing, aligning with the internal belief that miracles and cures can be located, accessed and integrated. You are right that facts speak volumes however, there has been a concerted effort to discredit facts as fake. Those who don't care about democracy, because they never studied it, never identified with it, never knew personally what the opposite of democracy could do to them, their loved ones, and their lives are at the mercy of potent sound bites that attract their simplistic attentions. We never thought we would return to a time where this country could go so far backwards in such short a time. Thank you for posting this and being that wise, honest voice contributing to the conversation about our choices of today!

I so agree with what you say about the discrediting of facts--and I wonder if we've ever seen anything like this since McCarthy when folks were being blackballed and discredited in the arts. Your comment here is so generous. My heart to yours. I love what you're doing and have meant to comment, particularly on the piece about your mother and yourself. I'd like to offer you a one-month paid subscription to my newsletter: I truly see a book in what you're doing. If you write me at mltabor@me.com, I'll do that, Jounalisa.
